Britain's Guardian newspaper reports:

That country's Science Museum has announced plans to use visitors' excrement to generate electricity -- it will be enough to power 15,000 light bulbs.
During a two-year expedition to Mars, a crew of six astronauts can generate more than six tons of waste. The current protocol is to ship the feces back to Earth. However, NASA is funding research to create a membrane microbial fuel cell that will recycle the excrement into drinking water, fertilizer and electricity."

'Excrement' among characters dumped from acceptable name list

"Rising indignation has forced scholars to backtrack from allowing characters for words such as "cancer" and "excrement" to be used for people's names.

The characters were among nine in the list of characters Japanese parents could use to name children."
